CHAPTER FOURTEEN

AMARA

I stepped into my Bridal Quarters, the scent of lavender and ozone filling my nostrils.

To my dismay, I found my helpers Frilla and Klovik waiting for me. Frilla’s silver skin shimmered in the low light, her three breasts rising and falling as she laughed softly. The sound was reminiscent of bells, delicate and melodic.

Klovik, on the other hand, stood with its long orange nosebraid hanging from one nostril, its reptilian body tense.

“Darling,” Frilla said, a smile spreading across her face. “We’ve been waiting for you.”

“Let us help you get ready,” Klovik added, its voice raspy.

For a moment, I wanted nothing more than to retreat from all the Bride Games shenanigans and go home. But I couldn’t. Not when Frankie was still on Station 21.

Not when I’d promised Vos I’d give us a chance.

I struggled to keep my emotions in check.

“Fine,” I muttered, forcing a tight-lipped smile.

“Good,” Frilla chirped. She motioned for Klovik to gather some supplies, and it scurried off without a word.

“Sit here, dear,” Frilla instructed, gesturing toward a plush chair. I obliged, sinking into the soft cushions reluctantly. My mind raced, thoughts of Vos Klavoii and the upcoming date with Zaxos consuming me.

I touched my lips absently, the heat of Vos’s kiss still lingering there.

“Is something wrong?” Frilla asked, worry etched into her features.

“Nothing,” I said quickly, pulling my hand away from my lips. “Just...thinking.”

“Ah,” she said knowingly. “Well, let’s get you ready for your next date with Zaxos, shall we?”

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat.

It wasn’t just Vos or Zaxos that had me on edge, but the uncertainty of this whole situation.

I let out a bitter laugh at the thought of escaping back to Earth, at the irony that home held even darker memories and dangers than the Bride Games.

My family and our Mafia connections cast a long shadow over my life, making any semblance of normalcy impossible.

A shiver ran down my back as I remembered the cold, unyielding terror that ruled my days there.

“Are you well?” Frilla’s tinkling voice pulled me back to the present.

“Of course,” I said. “Let’s get this over with.”

Frilla exchanged a glance with Klovik, who’d returned with an armful of clothing and accessories. They lay their selection out before me, and a twinge of anxiety at the sight jangled over my nerves.

With the exception of the last two days, it had been a while since I dressed up for anything, let alone a date.

“Here,” Frilla said, holding up a delicate blue dress. “This should complement your eyes beautifully.”

Klovik nodded in agreement, adding, “And these shoes will give you just the right amount of height without being uncomfortable.”

“Right,” I muttered, taking the dress from Frilla. The fabric, cool and smooth against my skin, was a combination of materials I couldn’t quite identify. I slipped it on, feeling almost exposed as it hugged my curves.

“Turn around, Amara.” Frilla’s gentle command prompted me to face away from her as she worked the zipper at the back of the dress.

I was grateful for the assistance but still uneasy about the upcoming date.
